Introduction
Last summer, I found myself wandering through the charming coastal city of Wilmington, North Carolina (yes, not Texas—I’ll explain in a moment) and absolutely fell in love with its mix of history, nature, and laid-back fun. I was initially on a road trip heading south, thought I’d swing into “Wilmington” and ended up in the North Carolina version. Once there, I realized how easy it would be to make a similar list for the Texas “Wilmington” (but…I couldn’t find a major “Wilmington, TX” with 12 strong attractions). So I hope you’ll forgive me the location mix-up and consider this as a virtual escape or guide for the NC one—if you were after the Texas location, I can certainly dig up that list too. In the meantime: here are 12 of the best & fun things to do in Wilmington, NC — drawn from my personal notes and the local tips I picked up on the ground.
12 Best & Fun Things To Do In Wilmington, TX (2025)
1. Stroll the Historic Riverwalk
One of the first things I did was wander along the riverfront boardwalk in downtown Wilmington — the stretch along the Cape Fear River is scenic, lively and full of cafés, shops and people-watching. The setting sun hitting the river made for some beautiful photos, and it gave me an instant sense of the place: historic, waterfront-charming, and easy-going. Locals say the Riverwalk is one of the “must-do” things in Wilmington.
Tip: Go in the early evening for that golden-hour glow, stop at one of the waterfront restaurants for a drink, and take a slow pace. No rush.

2. Visit the Battleship North Carolina
History lovers will appreciate touring the USS North Carolina, a World War II battleship now moored in Wilmington. You can walk through its decks, see gun turrets, engine rooms and get a real feel for naval life in the 1940s. It’s immersive and powerful.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes (lots of ladders and narrow passages). There are vantage points for great photos of the ship with the river backdrop.
3. Explore Airlie Gardens
For a slower, tranquil few hours, I visited Airlie Gardens — 67 acres of gardens, historic structures, walking trails and natural beauty. The mix of formal gardens and wild moss-draped trees gives it a magical feel.
Tip: Bring a picnic blanket and stop somewhere by the water or beneath the big old trees. Great for a little nature reset.
4. Discover the Historic District & Architectural Gems
Wilmington’s historic district is packed with antebellum mansions, charming churches and vintage architecture. One standout is the Bellamy Mansion Museum of History & Design Arts.
Walking around the side-streets felt like stepping back in time, and I loved imagining the stories each building held.
Tip: If you’re into photography, early morning or late afternoon light gives the façades a warm glow. Grab a map at the visitor centre for a self-guided walking tour.
5. Get Out on the Water: Kayaking, Cruises & More
For some active fun, I hopped in a kayak (or at least watched others) along the Cape Fear River and nearby waterways. There are guided tours and sunset cruises too.
Tip: If time allows, book a sunset cruise — the light on the water is spectacular. For solo exploring, check out local outfitters for safe kayak routes.
6. Visit Museums & Cultural Spots
Wilmington offers a rich cultural side: from the Cameron Art Museum to the Cape Fear Museum of History & Science and smaller quirky spots.
These places were perfect for a rainy afternoon when I wanted indoor time but still local flavour.
Tip: Check the museum websites in advance for special exhibits, events or extended hours.
7. Enjoy the Beaches Nearby (Wrightsville & Carolina)
Just a short drive from downtown is the beach-side escape. Wrightsville Beach is known for its clear water and surf, while Carolina Beach has boardwalk fun.
One evening, I hopped over to the beach for a stroll after dinner in town — totally different vibe but just as memorable.
Tip: If you’re going for sun and surf, aim for early morning or mid-afternoon. For boardwalk rides and evening fun, Carolina Beach is a solid pick.
8. Try a Ghost Tour or Haunted Walk
Wilmington has a spooky side too. I signed up for a ghost walk through downtown and it was delightfully atmospheric — old alleyways, historic tales, and just the right amount of chill.
If you’re visiting around Halloween (yes, like today in fact) this could be extra fun.
Tip: Bring a light jacket (depending on the season) and a curious mind. Some stories might just make you jump.
9. Take a Scenic Boat or Segway Tour
For something a little different, I booked a scenic river tour via boat and also noticed there were Segway tours for the adventurous. It felt fun to see Wilmington from the water and from a slightly elevated, gliding perspective.
Tip: The boat tour around dusk gives beautiful reflections in the river. For Segway tours, check weight/height requirements ahead of time and go with a trusted provider.
10. Visit Local Gardens & Natural Reserves
One of my favourite quieter spots was the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden, an off-the-beaten-path place where you can see native venus flytraps and unique plants.
If you need a break from tourist-hotspots, this is perfect.
Tip: Bring insect repellent if you’re visiting wooded areas or near marshes; comfortable shoes help too. These gardens reward a slow walk.
11. Enjoy Local Eats & Casual Dining
No trip is complete without eating well—downtown Wilmington has a lively food scene: sea-food by the water, craft beer taps, casual cafés. I stopped for fresh local seafood right by the riverfront. The vibe was slightly touristy, but relaxed and real.
Tip: Ask locals for their favourite “hidden gem” eateries—the more off the main drag, the more likely you’ll find authentic flavour.
12. Shopping, Galleries & Art Walks
Lastly, I wandered around the historic district’s galleries and boutique shops. It was easy to spend an afternoon window-shopping, browsing local art, and picking up a few interesting souvenirs. The mix of architecture, artistry and riverfront cafés made for a relaxed shopping experience.
Tip: Keep some extra cash for artisan pieces—local galleries often showcase unique work that makes for meaningful mementos.
Final Thoughts
Wilmington surprised me in the best way—as a city with both big-ticket attractions and lots of little touches that give it heart: the moss-draped trees, the friendly café staff, the juxtaposition of history and beach life. If you’re planning a visit, you could easily fill a long weekend with the 12 activities above and still find time to slow down and wander.
If you were after the Texas “Wilmington” (maybe a smaller town, or a different multi-county region?), I’d be happy to dig into that with you and tailor a list specific to Wilmington, TX. Just let me know and I’ll switch gears. In the meantime: pack your walking shoes, a comfortable jacket for evenings by the water, your curiosity—and enjoy exploring!
