Twenty-two years short of two centuries, St. Mary’s Catholic Church is still a landmark worth visiting and is one of the unique and free things to do when you find yourself in Fredericksburg.
Before erecting the stone church we see today, German Catholics built a smaller wooden church on the same grounds.
After the civil war ended, many Catholics arrived in Fredericksburg, and by 1900, the Catholic community was urgently in need of a larger space to worship.
With Gothic eccentricism in regards to the infrastructure of the Church, the “New” St. Mary’s Catholic Church was finalized.

37. Bankersmith, TX
Just a short drive from Fredericksburg you will find a lively town with a population of zero, but a plethora of activities.
Bankersmith is an old ghost town that is technically more for events than actual residency these days.
While it is near Fredericksburg, Bankersmith carries its own unique aesthetic and invites everyone for a dashing good time in a small town.
From the Margarita Festival in April to the Crawfish and Cajun Festival in August, Bankersmith hosts an array of fun things to see and do.
If you feel like shaking your groove thing, there’s an amazing Dance Hall on the immediate grounds.
Or maybe ice skating is your thing?
Say hello to a full-blown Ice Haus with all the German fixings the locals appreciate.
So make this weekend worth the hustle and visit Bankersmith for a delightful time while on vacation.
38. Fredericksburg’s Main Street
You can find a variety of specialty shops selling jewelry, home products, clothes, and artwork inside the stunning historic buildings along this section of Main Street.
As anticipated, the majority of the city’s daily activity is concentrated around Main Street in the downtown area, which also has a bustling nightlife after dark.
Main Street should always be your first choice when searching for things to do in Fredericksburg, especially at night, if you’re seeking for the classic trip essentials, like a decent restaurant or a variety of quaint stores and bars.
We suggest making it one of your sites of interest each time you visit, as the entire street is lined with places to see (and return to) as often as you like.
