Morgantown

A beautiful natural city that enjoys sports
Greetings from Mountaineer Country, the home of thousands of devoted, energetic citizens, West Virginia University, and its football program. There are almost all the natural resources you could ask for in this community on the Monongahela River, close to the Pennsylvania state line: mountains, rivers, lakes, and canyons. Morgantown is a welcoming, diverse city that has something to offer everyone. It combines exciting sports and outdoor activities (including hiking trails, whitewater rapids, and battlefields) with beautiful characteristics (like covered bridges, museums, wineries, scenic roads, and views).

The Arts, Football, and Much More
While the university’s Coliseum and Milan Puskar Stadium’s Mountaineer Field are well-liked by supporters, those interested in the visual and performing arts are more likely to visit WVU’s Art Museum (check out the Mesaros Galleries for a modern display). Visit the university’s Watts Museum to discover more about the coal and petroleum industries of the state, or stroll among flowers and hiking trails at the Core Arboretum. Go to Arthurdale, the first New Deal neighborhood founded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, off campus.

Four Recreational Seasons
Here, outdoor recreation is year-round, so make the most of it: Enjoy the 20 kilometers of whitewater rapids in Cheat Canyon or take a slower approach by going fishing at Big Bear Lake or Cheat Lake. Hike all the way up to the Sky Rock (183 meters) in Dorsey’s Knob Park or start down the Caperton Trail along the Monongahela, which passes through multiple parks. Climb to the summit of Cannon Hill, the site of a Civil War fight, if you want to mix a little history with your exercise. This area is popular for birding, so head to Cooper’s Rock State Forest, one of the best spots to see them, with your scope in hand.

Consume, Sip, Shop, and Have Fun
Downtown Morgantown is the hub of nightlife, with a variety of lounges, pubs, and breweries (try Iron Horse Tavern or Chestnut Brew Works) providing lively entertainment. If you’re more into wine, Forks of Cheat Winery offers seminars and tastings. Enjoy a meal at one of the eateries beside the Rail-Trail and Mon River. A range of performances are available from Metropolitan Theater, M.T. Pocket’s Theatre Company, and West Virginia Public Theatre. Visit the Morgantown Farmers Market, Morgantown Mall, University Towne Center, or Suncrest Town Center to indulge in some shopping therapy.
