A calm day at a Mystic Seaport harbor marina

Mystic

Idyllic New England town with nautical appeal

The village of Mystic has been based on maritime supplies and trade since the Pequot Indians lived there. Today, people who go to Mystic will find a classic New England spot full of nautical landmarks and activities.

Maritime History
Mystic Seaport has a huge collection of old boats, such as the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, and the Charles W. Morgan, the only remaining wooden whaling ship from the United States’ colonial era. Get on the schooner Argia and take a trip into Long Island Sound. The sail at sunset is especially beautiful. At the Mystic Aquarium, you can see the well-known beluga whales.

Well-known pizza and other foods
The coming-of-age movie “Mystic Pizza,” which starred Julia Roberts and came out in 1988, was based on a real Mystic restaurant. Get a slice and learn about the past of Hollywood at the same time. Of course, this seaside town is also known for its delicious fish. In the summer, you can eat dinner at the Oyster Club in a treehouse. Yes, a treehouse! In other places, you can get fresh oysters and a freshly poured pint at one of the many heritage pubs and seafood restaurants.

A Tour of the Landmarks
For such a small town, Mystic is packed with things that you must see. Take a few hours to look around the old downtown area and its cute shops. Get your camera ready because the Mystic River Bascule Bridge is about to be raised. In Olde Mistick Village, you can eat, drink, and shop at the small shops. At the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, you can spend some time hiking, looking at displays, and getting to know nature and wildlife. Take a shot at the cool wooden anchor in Liberty Pole Square before you leave.
